Quality Fictions

Firefly

order: gen/ensemble, alphabetical by character/pairing, crossover, rpf

(Grid format a la Doyle's setup available here.)

I firmly believe people should see the movie, Serenity, unspoiled. I refused to post a detailed response in my LJ after I saw an Advance Screening in May. I refused to post fics dealing with the Serenity movie until after it had come out in the States. I now have a page of quality fics set during/after the movie or informed by movie canon, but please do not go to that page until you have seen the movie.

gen/ensemble

Aphelion by Layton Colt (PG-13)
The Blue Hands are still after River. Includes a very interesting explanation of the Blue Hands.

Autumn by Ari (PG)
Authorial Summary: They walk together through autumn into winter.
Very atmospheric.

Back to Bellerophon by bugchicklv
The crew dresses up in a very unusual manner to infiltrate a Halloween costume ball. Very very funny. (And the River/Jayne is minor enough that you shouldn't let that deter you if you're not a fan. Believe me, the River/Jayne is so not the point of this piece. It's very much an ensemble piece.)

Box of Birds by Misha (G, 600 words)
A lovely look at each of the crew when Wash buys a box of chocolates for Zoe and shares.

Can't Look by Nicole Clevenger (PG)
Simon and River after "War Stories."

Consecration by Amy (ensemble, gen, about 3000 words)
Chanukah miracle fic! // Authorial Summary: We have done the impossible, and that makes us mighty.

Cry Havoc by BK the irregular
5-years post-series. Book is in jail. It just gets better from there. Intense. Love the dynamic between everyone. There needs to be so much more of this.

Day of the Dead by Amy (PG)
This is the day when the dead walk, and everyone on Serenity has a past.

Divergence by Ana
A brief look at What Could Have Been for each character. Mostly too depressing for me, but the Wash one is a must read.

Faith Based Initiative by victoria p. (ensemble; pg; 2,635 words)
Victoria wrote, "Self, says I, you should finish this story, because it's Mal and nuns, and there can be no bad there." True, true. It's vaguely caper-y, but what I really love is all the character interaction.

Holy Water by inlovewithnight
This time it's religious fanatics who are after River. Clever, funny, and just a good story.

Homestead by inlovewithnight
Authorial Summary: In everyone's life, there's the family you're born to and the family you choose.
A good solid story that reads like an episode of the show. The voices bring tears to my eyes reminding me of the show I love so much.

Jayne's Magnificent Cock by Distraction (PG-13)
Okay, okay, i finally broke down and recced what is The Humor Fic in this fandom.

Lex Talionis by Tara LJC O'Shea (R)
Something bad happens to Kaylee, and we watch flashbacks of her past while the crew reacts. Intense and powerful.

The Meeting by Nadia (PG)
     Meta-fun.

Memories of Guns by Jade [non-lj link]
Zoe and Wash's child, growing up on Serenity.

Milk Run by Kate Bolin
I think this was the first pregnant!Zoe fic I read, and I still like it. Light and real-feeling and has Zoe/Wash as well as an actual job.

A New World by Kurukami
A very interesting look at the birth in "Heart of Gold."
Remix: Nested Like Dolls (Under Your Skin Recitative) by Nifra Idril
River-centric, this improves upon the already quite good original fic.

Not a Campfire Story by jes (R)
A story of a man who met some Reavers, which turns into a really interesting possible backstory for a character we know.

Of Wonder Hamsters & Black Market Beagles by [lunarknightz] (G)
A wonderfully believable and humorous story following up on that mention in "Jaynestown" of the hamster that got named after Simon.

Playing by Brandi
The cut-tag text said, "In which Wash is valiant, but River has no mercy... "

Quiet by Niki Blue (R)
Authorial Summary: His hands were covered in blood.
More atmospheric than violent, though there's certainly a lot of description of the aftermath. Creepy.

Rumpelstiltskin by Lorraine (Regan Tam-centric piece; gen; takes place pre-series;1127 words)
A very interesting Regan-centric take on the Tam parents' complicity in what happened to River.
lyrstzha did a commentary on it here.

Shark by Kurukami (PG)
A really interesting scene that could have taken place between "Ariel" and "Objects in Space."

Trust by Tara LJC O'Shea (PG)
Telling you who/what it's about ruins some of the surprise. And you're gonna wanna read it a second time.

Two By Two by knightshade (PG)
A light-hearted piece for a "shoes" prompt. To say more would spoil the ending.

Unexpected Places by Tafkar
Simon's not the only person aboard Serenity who had originally dreamt of ending up somewhere very different.

Weaver by Kurukami (PG)
River-centric. The things she sees. The way she sees the crew.

We Walk a Thousand Stairs by Ana (Zoe-centric gen, PG)
This Zoe-centric fic moves back and forth between the War and the present, and I particularly love pre-Serenity-Valley -- and how much we can see that he is still the same person. And oh, Zoe and Wash.

The whole show by Ana (Mal, Saffron/Badger; PG-13) [personal lj link]
Authorial Summary: Some days, Mal figures the 'verse is out to get him. Other days, not so much.

Woman Parts by Mary Borsellino
Authorial Summary: Three things that happened when Simon Tam woke up and noticed, to his rather considerable surprise, that he was female.

Book

The Habits of a Lifetime by Eleanor K. (PG)
Takes place shortly after "Safe." It's about Book, and this possibility feels so plausible to me. Chilling, though the fic is not without its light moments. And just a really well-put-together piece.

Rise Up No More by Otter (PG-13)
A killer look at who Book used to be and why he became a Shepherd, that does a tremendously believable job of explaining it all, including how it all fits together with canon.

Roses by tteere
He remembers the flowers most of all.

Simple Things (the "Judged By Its Cover" remix) by Kurukami (PG)
While technically a Remix, this story really stands on its own. It jumps off from a moment in canon (which the original fic also centers on) and builds a large and believable backstory.

Inara

Been Too Long by hossgal (R)
Inara's past and present through the eyes of another.

The Boy She Left Behind by Executrix
Inara and Simon knew each other before ... but really it could have been any doctor; what I find so fascinating here is the imagined backstory for Inara.

Character Study by Ana (PG)
Inara, playing roles. Not entirely what you'd expect.

Charmed Life by Northlight (R)
Inara has a story. (4 things...)

A tender look at one of Inara's clients, touching on themes of relationships and what it means to be a Companion.

Inara, training to be a Companion.

Jordan by A.j. (post-"Objects in Space")
Inara has left Serenity, but part of it is inside her.

Never home by Igeria
Inara thinking about children, with a really interesting backstory for her as well as a true look at the family dynamics on Serenity.

Never So Close by Azar
I love this idea about why Inara left Sihnon.

Professionals by inlovewithnight
Great Inara and Jayne interaction. And they really are more similar than one would think.

The Women of Qumar by victoria p. (Inara/Nandi; adult; 505 words)
It has long seemed totally plausible to me that Inara and Nandi were more than just friends during Training, but I'd never thought about how, given that, Nandi's leaving might have influenced Inara to become the person we see in canon who so strongly resists emotional attachment.

Inara/Kaylee

All Grown Up by victoria p.
A lovely brief look at how Kaylee perceives the differences between men and women.

The Other Woman by Helens (Kaylee/Inara)
Double drabble. Inara on Kaylee's relationship with Serenity. I have so much love for this fic.

Trial and Error by Pearl-O (Inara/Kaylee, Kaylee/everybody; PG)
     Authorial Summary: Kaylee loves everybody.

happy just to dance with you by _curiouser
     Very short ficlet.
Warning: Other fics in the post include Serenity movie spoilers.

Him by Kristen Elizabeth (G)
Inara thinks about the kids she could have had with Mal. I don't really see Inara as wanting kids, but this starts off really believably so I'm somewhat willing to suspend disbelief and get swept along with the premise.

King of Thieves by Knudbrox (G)
     River's historical metaphor.

Last Dance by victoria p.
Inara leaving, one of Mal's last moments with her, made me literally cry.

Not a Cage Anymore by Jen Northwood (Mal/Inara)
Mal thinking about wanting Inara, with a very interesting metaphor I hadn't thought of before.
Note: Other ficlets in the same post contain spoilers for the Serenity movie.

Red by 2x2, aka thorfinna (G, 239 words)
I really like the contrast the author draws between what red used to mean to Mal and what it can mean to him now.

Steps of the Dance by Katinka
While they're dancing in "Shindig," Inara wonders about how Mal learned to dance. I love her being interested in him despite herself.

Sweet by HawkMoth
Established Mal/Inara. Chocolate covered strawberries. Good times.

The Way We Never Met: Five Things in a Box by Athenae (PG)
AU. Mal and Inara meet under different circumstances. The war still haunts them.

Inara/River

Filtering Eliot by glossolalia
In keeping with the title, the fic is beautiful and poetic and just a little disturbing.

A Light in the Darkness by Amy (PG-13)
"Apples, real apples, even fresh ones, taste old, as old as life itself. Baby apples right off the branch crunch and you know that they're ancient. Everything else tastes new."
Remix: Light in the Darkness (Samsara Mix) by inalasahl (PG, very mild Serenity spoilers)
Amy said, "when I wrote it I wanted it to be saying things about both River and Inara and it only said things about River but now this one actually, like, says stuff about Inara."

Inara/Simon

Small Certainties by Eleanor K. (PG-13)
"Future AU, or at least AU to the movie." Has some great character insights and evocative scenes.

Wine and Sympathy by Shanna (PG, after "Objects in Space")
Authorial Summary: Inara finds a sympathetic ear (and maybe something more) during a sleepless night.
This fic does a very good job of show-don't-tell with the ways in which Inara and Simon can relate with each other better than with the rest of the crew, and the setup for a relationship between the two of them is believable but gently set up so it';s worth reading if you're interested in either of the characters even if you're not keen on the 'ship.

Inara/Zoe

Milk and Ash by Pearl-o (minor Inara/Zoe; primarily gen)
Wow. This is intense. A possible future that is so real and painful. Raw and tender and just . . . Zoe.
And the remix -- Means of Expression (Go Thy Way Remix) by Molly -- adds new layers to the wonderful original story.

Unchained Melody by Bonibaru [skyehawke link]
     Jayne and Vera. So sensual.

Jayne/Kaylee

Expedient Ana (NC-17)
This follows the introduction of the Councilor in "War Stories." I've gotten to really like Jayne/Kaylee, and this does a really nice job of working with their desires and personalities.
There's also a sequel, Restless, which I don't think is as good, though it's not a bad follow-up piece and it's got some great humor moments.

In a Flash by Meegzi (R)

     Kaylee, talking about fruit.

Kaylee/River

Promise by Rose Williams (River/Kaylee, G)
This drabble set after Objects in Space packs a lot, and I love the ending.

Something Old by Eleanor K. ("Objects in Space" and after) PG
It's not really shippy until the NC-17 sequel (Something New)

Unitled by mosca [personal lj link]
River-centric, taking a prompt of "guns" and exploring language and symbol in some unexpected ways.

Kaylee/Simon

Coffee, Tea, or Me by Kurukami (set just before the opening of "Jaynestown")

Mal-centric AU. The Independents win the war. I cried.

Mal/River

About a Girl by Molly
Lots of interesting metaphor-ness about River, and then there's her and Mal and it's dark and ouchy.

Broadway by Molly (PG-13)
It's AU (a Nashville dive bar) and yet they are so perfectly themselves from the very opening.
And the companion piece (River's POV): Singer

Broke by m.jules (Mal/Kaylee, Mal/River)
Post-"Objects in Space." The Mal/Kaylee feels so true, and then River at the end...

Desire by m.jules
"I just needed to see the sky again. You're like the sky -- cold and warm and a mystery in plain sight. Now I know who I am again."
Authorial Summary: "You dream so loudly she aches with it and she wakes me up because she can't sleep."

In Dreams by Kurukami
Mmm, shared dreams, and all that comes with that.

A lovely short piece ... I really like how Mal's expectations of Simon are subverted.

In The Rough by Sophie Richard (PG)
     Simon's thoughts on beauty.

Untitled by Pogrebin (Mal and Simon)
A ficlet that to me at least totally implies subtext, and does it so well. Spot-on characterization and voices.

Most of these are dark, but they're all well-done.

     River and Ruby. (During "Safe.")

Nine Voices, and the Search for a Tenth by victoria p. (G)

The way around, the way through by victoria p. (Harry Potter crossover; Remus Lupin, River Tam; gen; 1650 words)

And the remix -- Means of Expression (Go Thy Way Remix) by Molly -- adds new layers to the wonderful original story.

Property by Mona (R)
Authorial Summary: "Zoe's survival instincts were honed from years of being strong and beautiful and someone else's possession." A possible Origin of Zoe.

Other

Do we not bleed? by Kispexi2 (Badger, Badger/Mal; PG-13)
Badger is fleshed out so believably, and I actually feel for him.

20 Things You Didn't Know About Saffron by HopefulNebula
I don't even like Saffron. And I won't say this fic made me feel for her, because that implies a softening of the character, but this fic made me really get into her. A very believable collection of backstory and personality.

The whole show by Ana (Mal, Saffron/Badger; PG-13) [personal lj link]
Authorial Summary: Some days, Mal figures the 'verse is out to get him. Other days, not so much.

The Women of Qumar by victoria p. (Inara/Nandi; adult; 505 words)
It has long seemed totally plausible to me that Inara and Nandi were more than just friends during Training, but I'd never thought about how, given that, Nandi's leaving might have influenced Inara to become the person we see in canon who so strongly resists emotional attachment.

crossover

The Big Bang and Everything After by Mandy's Bitch (Stargate: Atlantis crossover, Rodney McKay / River Tam, PG-13)
The pairing is mostly not the point here, and while my minimal knowledge of Stargate enhanced the fic for me, I think even going in one cold one could really appreciate the fic. I find it rather brilliant. And the pairing is more about these two people connecting than about squick, in case you were worried.

A Dreamer's Dream by m00nbrain (Angel crossover; River, Angel; PG; 628 words) [personal lj link]
Authorial Summary: River and Angel meet for the first time but where? Why?

Her Vorpal Sword in Hand by Sängerin (BtVS, Cordelia/River, R)
Cordelia's not my favorite character, so it was really the title (oh the "You're Welcome" imagery!) that sucked me in, though I was wary about the idea of pairing her with River (who is one of my favorite characters). The fic actually makes it make sense, though. I can't say how without spoiling it, but really, go read it.

Hitching a Ride by Meltha (BtVS) [lj link]
Stowaway will probably become a cliched way to introduce a character to the Firefly crew, but it works really well in this story. This story also manages to focus on two characters I don't have great love for and yet cause me to unequivocally love the story.

How Kaylee Frye Won Two Bets in the Space of One Trip by Twinkledru J. (Fred/Willow, BtVS and Angel, PG)
Very sweet interaction and in-character voices.

The "I" In Tam by Executrix (BtVS, PG-13) [lj link]
Something of an S4 redux with a strangely believable way of crossing these ‘verses. Selling points: Ethan Rayne, Maggie Walsh, Faith, and some interesting plot twists with fairly solid characterization.

Incurable by Ari (crossover with Harry Potter and BtVS; McGonagall/Giles/River, with other pairings implied)
Authorial Summary: The Room of Requirement, an insane asylum, a cottage in France, and three very broken people.

Nights of endless conversations by Fahye (Sandman, PG)
Okay, the title is cheesy, but the Endless visiting the crew of Serenity is priceless.

Our Passenger by Troll Princess (Terminator crossover, Jayne Cobb/Sarah Connor, R)
I don't know the Terminator movies at all, but this works really well.

Passion of Shadows by voleuse (Angel, Nina/Inara, PG)
I have some difficulty with this Nina, but it is so beautiful that the lack of transtional exposition is forgivable.
(Inara pre-series, Nina very much post-series.)

A Pretty Boat by Mary Borsellino (Pirates of the Caribbean)
Captain Jack Sparrow aboard Serenity. Brilliant and hysterical and rather perfect.

School of Lost Souls by Alixtii (BtVS crossover, Fred/River, NC-17)
Authorial Summary: Knowledge without soul can be a dangerous thing.
DVD commentary
here.

Serenterprise-D by inlovewithnight (ensemble, ST:TNG)
The Firefly crew meets their Star Trek: The Next Generation counterparts. Hysterical.

Should Shadows Fall by girlchild (Angel, Nina/Kaylee, G)
Image-heavy (the prompts were art, leaves, and love) lovely short piece.

To Quench Her by Ari (BtVS, Jenny Calendar/Kaylee Frye, PG, 989 words)
Authorial Summary: The heat of August awakens new thirsts in Janna's heart.
Amazing imagery and evocativeness. Very real-feeling.

True Love by Executrix (Angel, River and Cordelia, 536 words)
The title riffs on the first epigraph, and it is a light fic, but it is the more poignant, darker, aspects which so I so love.

Untitled by Alixtii (Joss Whedon, Ideal Audience, River Tam)
Categorized as crossover for lack of anything better. From that "write me letters from fictional persons meme." It's Joss Whedon writing to his Ideal Audience, with a cameo from River, and it's so very in character and the allusions are amazing.

Untitled by Mary Jo [entwashian]
The first 5 ficlets in a series. Centers on Dawn, with implications of her Keyness, and a believable way to cross ‘verses.

The way around, the way through by victoria p. (Harry Potter; Remus, River; gen; 1650 words)
Authorial Summary: "You're like Simon. Simon keeps me from going too far. Always takes the way around, instead of the way through."
This works so well.

What would happen if [Gregory House] got [River Tam] pregnant? by carla_scribbles
From that 12 characters 20 questions meme (third one down). A fabulous summary of an unwritten fic.

Bullshit by Alixtii (Michelle Trachtenberg/Summer Glau, Jewel Staite, Joss Whedon; R) [lj link]
Authorial Summary: "Michelle is on the prowl." "Do you think we should warn Summer?" "No, she's a big girl." (Even as you say it, you know it's bullshit.)
This actually starts with Michelle and Jewel bonding, and the "you" in the excerpt is Joss. I think I'm actually most impressed by the Joss in this, though I also enjoy the women.

Have Your Cheesecake and Eat It Too by moosesal (Jewel Staite foodporn, G)
Authorial Summary: Jewel enjoys her cheesecake a little more than Adam, Gina, and Nathan think is normal.
I would personally rate it higher than G for all the innuendo. Remember Kaylee with the strawberry? Jewel with cheesecake ratchets that up a notch. Each person's reaction to the situation is fabulous.
